The Piacentino Rating System

Hi and welcome to Pizza Piacentino where my goal is to be the authoritative guide to good pizza. I love any and every pizza. Even the worst pizza on earth is a good meal to me. I'll say it again, I love pizza. Pizza in the morning, pizza in the evening, pizza at supper time, when I'm getting hungry it's pizza everytime. I've searched far and wide for a website that rates pizza, but here's the problem. I don't trust the average person's thoughts about pizza. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and that rings very true when it comes to pizza. I think common sentiment is that NY Pizza is the best type of pizza you can get. But for people that didn't grow up in or around New York that is a difficult concept. Some people grew up on Domino's Pizza and are perfectly happy eating just that. And as I said before, there is no such thing as bad pizza, so I can't argue with people who prefer Domino's. If that is what you like, good for you. At least you don't have to search far and wide for it when you want it. But for me, it is different. I'm very particular about my pizza, I might like any pizza, but nothing in this world compares to those first couple of bites into a GOOD PIZZA.

Outside of Lombardi's in Little Italy in the city. Supposedly the first pizzeria in the United States.

My priorities in life are my wife and son, and then PIZZA. So, while many of you may not agree with my thoughts about pizza and how I rate it. I hope you can find this site as a stepping point for your own search for the perfect pizza. I'm a pretty picky eater overall, so I think that in general, my recommendations would be good for people because I'm so conservative. If I like something, generally others will to. So I'm going to give it a try. My goal is to give you a review of all the best pizza joints accross the United States. This might take some time. But eventually this guide should be pretty comprehensive. And since I've been an avid pizza eater for years, I've got some archived information in my head to get things started. I also like to keep track of the best pizza delivery chains, frozen pizzas, and pizza chain restaurants, so this site will be pretty all encompassing. I'm not much of a cook, so I won't go the route of making your own pizza. But otherwise I eat pizza at minimum 4 times a week, so this site should be updated pretty often.

So let me begin by explaining my ratings. I'll get into more detail as you get to know me but this is a list of what's important to me in a pizza.

First and foremost, I'll always be ordering pepperoni pizza. I could eat pounds of pepperoni and I believe one of the key's to a good pizza is the oil that soaks into the cheese from cooked pepperoni is essential.

Crust- I was born in New York and grew up with NY style pizza, so my first preference is thin crust. But while that is my top choice, I'm a bread lover in general as well, so I can go for any style of crust. Crust is extremely important to me.

Sauce- In general, I prefer a light amount of sauce. I don't want the sauce to overwhelm the overall taste, but it should also be tasty enough that just a little bit of it is good enough.

Cheese- It is important that the volume of cheese is balanced with the rest of the pie. I also think that the pie should be cooked until the cheese is slightly brown.

Grease- This is where my general thoughts about pizza may differ from yours. I think grease is a good thing. The combination of oil, with the grease from the pepperoni and melted cheese is important to me. I personally wouldn't ever say there is too much grease, the more the merrier for me. If you don't like grease I would recommend that you still want your pizza cooked with the grease and you can do what you need to to get rid of the grease such as soak it up with a napkin (I call this the salad eater method). But even if you do that, for you to get a good pizza, your pizza needs to come with more grease.

Toppings- As I mentioned, my pizza ordering begins and ends with Pepperoni. So this is a pretty easy category for me. Most pepperoni is satisfactory, but occasionally it doesn't pass the test.

Foldability- Less to do with taste and more to do with my passion and love for old school pizza eating. The best pizzas from my childhood consisted of slices so big that you have to fold them to get them in your mouth. I still like to hark back and remember those days when eating a slice of pizza. So while this is a small factor overall, it is still important to making my pizza eating experience enjoyable.

Atmosphere- Again, this doesn't affect my ratings on the pizza too much, but it is always nice to eat somewhere where you are relaxed and comfortable, as well as knowing you'll get a refill on that coke when you need it. I'll cover this more as I review places.

So there it is.
